Part I
The Haunting on Forest Drive
“Honey... Honey can you sleep” Jess whispers
“Yes Honey... why can you not” Ed responds
“I’m just having a hard time, I don’t know what the problem is”
“Do you want me to go get you a glass of milk? I know that usually helps”
“If you don’t mind...”
“I don’t mind, wait here”
Ed drags himself out of bed, the floor creaking like it hasn’t been touched in years, the door making a slow creak as it opens slowly, trying to stay quiet to not wake any of the kids. Ed walks down the hall checking on all the kids one room at a time, his youngest son Eli, and his youngest daughter Abby rest in their beds in their room. Moving on to the next room he sees his older daughters Shannon and Megan sleeping peacefully in their room, it brings joy to Ed, he is very proud of his children and loves them dearly. He misses them when he has to work a lot and work pulls him away, but that’s just how it is. Continuing down the hallway he passes past his oldest sons room, Tommy.
“Tommy what are you doing up... it’s 2 in the morning”
“Sorry Ed....”
“Dad. it’s dad”
“Right, sorry dad... I’m just having a hard time getting sleep”
“Is everything alright?”
“I guess...”
“Talk to me, I know you’re an adult now, but you’re never too old to talk to your pops”
“I just miss the old house, this house doesn’t feel right”
“I know Tom... sometimes your mother and I miss the old house too, it was our home for a very long time, but it just wasn’t good for us anymore, this is home now”
“I know...”
“What?”
“I just... I think I see things here sometimes...”
“What are you seeing?”
“It’s very unclear, it just... I don’t know”
“Well let’s talk more in the morning, you need to get to bed, you can always come sleep with mom and dad in their bed if you need”
“Dad I’m 20, I think I’m gonna be alright here thanks”
“Just an offer, get some sleep, I’ll see you in the morning”
Closing the door to the room Ed continues downstairs, every creak and every crack as he slowly makes his way down the stairs. Passing by the living room their is a light coming from the doorway. Ed pauses and begins to ponder, thinking about what Tommy had just told him, brushing it off he continues forward.
“Oh, someone left the TV on”
Ed trying to find the remote everywhere finally finds it, he pushes the power button but the TV doesn’t turn off... he tries again but the TV continues to static.
“What the hell”
He opens up the back and is surprised to see there are batteries in the remote, he finally gives up and quickly unplugs the TV, finally the static goes away. All Ed can think about is what Tommy had just told him, he walks into the fridge and gets his wife her glass of milk, brings it back upstairs to to his bedroom.
“What took ya so long?”
“Got sidetracked, sorry honey”
She finishes her milk and they both lie down and go to sleep.
